It is an exciting time for Matt, as he has been appointed interim Head Coach of the Wales National Men’s team until the end of the Six Nations. We look forward to him sharing his experiences.
Matt has been Head Coach at Cardiff Rugby since August 2023, having previously been backs and attack coach at the club. He was part of the senior Wales Rugby coaching team on their tour to the Pacific Islands in 2017.
Matt started his coaching career with Gloucestershire under-15s. It soon became clear that he was destined for greater things. He had a short spell as a Community Rugby Coach with the RFU before moving to Worcester Warriors Academy. His talent was soon recognised, and he was recruited into the senior squad coaching team. Following this, Matt had coaching roles at Bristol Rugby, Cardiff, and Ospreys before rejoining Cardiff and becoming Head Coach in 2023.
He has kept true to his purpose of coaching in a way that he had not been coached. His style is player-centred and empowering. He has empathy with the players and confidence in their ability, which has earned the trust and loyalty of the players who work with him, bringing the best out of them.
His knowledge and admiration of the history of Cardiff Rugby have enabled him to build on the culture at the club, with a willingness and enthusiasm to develop and play local players, which, in turn, creates exciting team performances.
An innovative, creative coach with an understanding of the influence of culture on performance:
“It’s about getting the players to understand they are playing for a great club and a great city.”
